History:
Runa was raised by her father, a scientist named Ordin, and her mother, a human doctor named Elaine, on the outer edge of Wintervale. Her childhood was full of luxury and learning, of which she soaked up equally. She was very outgoing, a social butterfly who would become fast friends with anyone she came in contact with. She cherished quality time with her parents, but she understood their long hours as they were trying to help better technology, medicine, and humanity as a whole. The whole family was never specifically interested in Pokémon. Neither of her parents had more than their partner Pokémon. While they treated their partners well, they often considered them more as tools to help their careers than anything else. They also made lovely playmates when Runa was little!
When the fog began to descend, it took her parents a good while to even take notice. Her mother spent most of her time at the hospital, listening to bogus stories about monsters and destruction while she tended to very real wounds and injuries. Her father rarely saw the sun, since his private laboratory was in the family home's basement. But soon, he did take an interest in the fog - an interest that would soon destroy the family inside and out.
Four years ago, only three months after Runa's eighteenth birthday, her father had had enough of the conspiracy theories, enough of the monster stories, enough of the folk tales and myths that had sprung up about this ridiculous fog that had spread around the region. He had a pretty good flashlight, and he was going to check it out for himself. He packed himself a bag of equipment, a small first aid kit (in case he tripped or something!), and some granola bars. He kissed his wife and daughter goodbye, and informed them that he would be back home for dinner.
It was the first time he had ever lied, and he would never get the chance to apologize.
Ordin's disappearance sent Elaine into a mental spiral. Over the next month, it got progressively worse. She stopped sleeping, spending all day and night at the hospital. She started to write absurd notes about the fog, about hearing Ordin's voice calling to her. One morning, she came to the conclusion that the only reason that he wouldn't have come home is that he wasn't able to. He wasn't dead, she *knew* that. She would feel if he was. He was out there somewhere, he was lost, and he was hurt, or he would have come home to them.
Runa begged her not to go, but there was a determination in Elaine's puffy, tear-stained eyes that would take more than a daughter's love to break through, and a daughter's love was all Runa could offer.
She waited for a while. Six months went by where she refused to leave her home, she would pace the furthest reach of the yard, where she could see the spot in the fog that her parents had both disappeared into, hoping that one day they would re-materialize and hold her again. She began to lose hope, and would watch from further and further away. Eventually, it got too painful to be in the large, empty house alone. The authorities had ruled that her parents had perished in the fog, and all of their assets were hers. She sold the house. Everything in her father's lab was donated to those who funded him for so long, everything in her mother's library was donated to the hospital, and everything that was left was sold and funded her own pockets.
She had some friends that helped her through her grief, at least that's what she thought they were doing. It only took a couple of weeks to squander most of her wealth on things like augments, cybernetics, parties, alcohol, and other things. While she never partook in anything illegal, she had no qualms with sliding her "friends" the money they needed to do so, as long as they agreed to keep her company. When the money was all but gone, she found that her friends started to disappear. They would stop responding to her messages, refuse her calls, ignore her invitations to hang out. She found herself alone.
Runa had saved herself just enough money to get a small apartment in a northwest corner of Grovehart, and to help her acquire a job in data management at a small tech company that works with suppression tech within walking distance from her new home. Soon, she physically couldn't bear the feeling of loneliness, and wandered off into the frozen forest with the intention of catching herself a Pokémon partner, something that couldn't run away from her, that couldn't abandon her. Something that would care for her as much as she cared for it. And she found it - rather, him. A strange, shining, floating blue Tyrunt spinning towards her through the frosted pines of the forest, and instinctually she shot her arms up to cover her face. He almost slammed into her, but at the last second, he hit the pokeball in her hand, and the button depressed.
Eddryr the minior tyrunt fusion became the most genuine friend she had ever had.
Runa still has a long way to go. One can often find her in the frozen forest, or the northernmost reaches of Wintervale, walking a safe distance from, but parallel to, the rolling wall of fog that ate her parents not so long ago, or sitting somewhere in silence trying to read a book that should not take nearly this long to read. But in between these moments of desperation and dissociation, she has started to become herself again. She and Eddryr spend time volunteering to help others, in honor of her parents, or studying to try to find her own niche in the world where she can do some real good. She has become interested in tech, but also music and, interestingly enough, Pokémon - the thing that her parents never gave much thought, she suddenly began to realize were much more than meets the eye.
