Volunteer work would've never in a million years been on Klaus's list of stuff to do or would willingly do. He wouldn't even have agreed to it had it not been Salami who had suggested it as something for him to do on his days off while waiting for the magikarp man to get off of his many shifts, and he still would not have agreed to it had he not been told it would be worth his time to gain his favor with how many scuffles Spicy seemed to get himself in, and as he stroked the fur of the quilanine he couldn't help but silently agree that it seemed like a good idea at the time. He rubbed his fingers through the long silky fur of his beloved starter pokemon and couldn't help but begin to worry about how often the pokemon did in fact get in get into scuffles to defend his trainer and always often got pretty badly injured in the exchange, worrying his trainer endlessly as he endlessly purchased over priced potions to heal him. Not to mention that Spicy hated the burn from the potion, he much rather would do anything else including just suffering. He continued to think on it as he rubbed his hands over the Quilanine's large head that rested on his lap as he was driven towards the volunteer site and he couldn't help but make a face. He had been suggested to wear something he wouldn't mind getting dirty, which wasn't much, but he had thrown on one of salami's sleeping shirts, without fish on it, and some sweatpants, making him somehow look even smaller then this 5'4 frame already did. He just wasn't looking forward to this labor at all and luckily for him, this would merely consist of after care for pokemon who needed it.
Or so called 'luckily'. The thought of having to cuddle dirty stray pokemon had made him itch a tad but he got over it, and Spicy had been permitted to come for the socialization as well as some healing of his own. He had a few small, luckily mostly cosmetic scars across his snout from lashing out at another trainer's mightyena that had snarled at his trainer, that being the first unofficial 'pokemon battle' that Klaus had ever done and he didn't want to have any more, it had stressed him out beyond belief even though the other person hadn't seem worried until his pokemon had been treated like a chew toy. He had paid for their own medical care to prevent any drama and the person had seemed surprised at the gesture. When he had been fighting with the 300lb, 5ft tall fusion to administer the potion is when Salami had suggested doing so, having heard they grant access to their services to those who help and had alternatives to potions. As they pulled up he couldn't help but make a face and not move, but his driver, an old man named Einstin who had been driving him and his family around since he was a toddler, knew him well enough and patiently waited. He had seemed surprised at Klaus's request, and oddly happy to see the young man doing some good in the world and has been all too happy to come on his day off to do so. Klaus trusted no other driver the same, and as he finally stepped out of the car, holding the door open for his pokemon he paused. "Thank you, Einstin. I appreciate it." He said somewhat quietly, and the man gave him a cheery smile that wrinkled at the corner of his eyes. "Of course, young master. Do be safe and let me know when you're done for the day, alright?" He replied happily, and Klaus nodded before closing the door behind him and staring at the center he'd be assisting at and finally let out a dramatic, long winded groan as the car pulled away. Spicy tilted his oversized head at his trainer, his fur almost shimmering in the light thanks to his weekly grooming sessions, and simply earned himself another few kisses on the head and some cheek squishes. The pokemon stuck the tip of his tongue out in joy and chuffed, closing his eyes and enjoying it until his trainer pulled away. "Let's go, love. Let's get this day over with." He sighed, once more before going towards the door defeatedly.
As he walked in he was hit with shockingly, only the smell of a clean medical center. It was almost pleasant in comparison to what he was expecting. He was expecting maybe the stench of dirty pokemon and sick pokemon alike, loud abrupt clamoring and more. As he walked up and slipped over his approved application to volunteer the receptionist hummed happily. "Always so nice to see the younger citizens of Brookfell coming to assist in these hard times. Then even better you brought such a handsome boy!" She crooned, leaning forward to pet Spicy who wagged his tail happily at the compliments, snuffling at the jar of treats they kept on the counter and was promptly handed a pokeblock from it. "He's actually here for his checkup while I work..." He said kind of quietly, suddenly feeling quite awkward for wanting to dip so badly when the lady was obviously beaming at seeing volunteers come in. "Well of course!" She said happily, pulling him to the back, handing his leash to a nurse and leading him to where he'd be volunteering.
It was honestly, quite pleasant. He put on some scrubs and so he hadn't even needed to worry about clothes, and a face mask that made him glad he hadn't bothered with makeup outside of some chapstick to combat Brookfell's dry air. All of the pokemon, both strays and owned alike where beyond delighted to recieve the attention after the traumatic experiences they had dealt with. The ones from various fighting rings where all beyond sweet, startling the young man even more and before he knew it, the receptionist had come to let him know his timer was over. He hesitation, the head of a lycanroc settled on his lap happily, not wanting to disturb the sweet girl. "...Oh... Already?" He asked, almost disappointed. She smiled kindly, offering her hand as he took it to get up much to the dismay of the dog pokemon. "You're free to come back to volunteer as much as you'd like!" She chirped, and Klaus nodded as he filled out some more forms, picking up Spicy who was delighted to see his trainer and after a quick call to Einstin, he was picked up and on his way home, and a glance at his phone indicated that Salami would be off by the time he got home as well.. What a day, and as he leaned back in the car and cuddled Spicy, he definitely wouldn't say it was one that had been wasted.
