Nera and Fusions

Lore
Is this what happens when science has gone too far?

Where it All Began

Like many of the world's problems, the Nera Outbreak and subsequent tribulations that followed were humankinds creations. A climate of fear sparked by the fighting of two ancient giants, Kyogre and Groudon, in another region spurned the research into pokemon powers to avoid natural disasters at a hidden facility in the mountain ranges near Brookfell.

This research included the cloning ability posessed by Mewtwo, and Kyurems DNA splicing ability to create stabalized creatures. By combining these two powers the scientists involved were able to create Nucleic Spheres, non-sentient balls of energy that held the ability to harness and contain DNA.

This practice was limited, as the Spheres were only able to hold the DNA of cloned pokemon, and those were extremely rare. One particular scientist petitioned to replace Mewtwo's place in the experiment with Ditto due to it's ability to clone any pokemon, but his proposal was rejected. The hubris of this scientist pushed him to continue in secret despite their rejection. His name has since been redacted from all official records.

The original Nucleic Spheres had their name shortened to simply 'Nera', and became a point of fascination among the hidden scientific community. Nera were able to mimic and hold the DNA of the first pokemon it touched, and then fuse that DNA to the next pokemon it came into contact with to become a stable fusion, and effectively a new species all-together. This practice was kept contained and regulated, and very little of the public even knew of its existence.

Eventually, nature got in the way. The Nera began self-reproducing by splitting into multiple spheres at random, vastly increasing in number. After an incident at the original laboratory where most of the Nera experiments were being held, the Nera were released into the wild ecosystem - forever changing the way the regions pokemon and nature were balanced. Many efforts were made to try to contain this outbreak, but it grew exponentially once it was released, and was unstoppable.

Most characters only know there was an initial outbreak, but will not know of the lab accident or prior experiments, or even exactly how the Nera works. The public at large was never fully explained the origins of these Neras and left very much in the dark regarding how they came to be or how they affect humans and pokemon!

Fusions

Nera that passes by and collect the DNA of wild Pokemon do not bother or harm the Pokemon. They may feel the bump from the Nera but the mimicking of the DNA is an invisible touch.

When a Nera containing DNA fuses to a pedigree Pokemon it becomes the very soul of a Pokemon which allows them stronger control over their new possible typing and abilities but also has a strange vulnerability. Nera can be removed temporarily from a Pokemon but doing so effectively removes their soul and leaves the fusion in a sleep-state until it has been returned. A fused Nera looks like a bright ball with the Pokemon’s features up close, from afar they appear as balls of light.

Nera that haven't fused with a Pokemon are non sentient non sapient orbs of energy, they do not think or feel.

Types of Nera

Blank
Blank Nera are void of any outside interference, they are a clean canvas. They can be caught in jars by trainers to be transported and used to capture specific Pokemon DNA.

DNA
As the name suggests, these Nera are infused with Pokemon DNA. Upon touching an unfused Pokemon they will change the genetic make-up of that creature before vanishing. Unless it has been specifically infused with certain DNA, the orb will contain a random Pokemon. Legendaries cannot be fused with multiple parts due to conflicting power.

Attribute
These Nera have taken only specific parts of the Pokemon's genetic make-up. This can be colours or features. Once a Pokemon interacts with Attribute Nera they can gain changed features or variations of existing features. For example; leaves on a Pokemon changing species, fins changing style or a colourful Pokemon becoming monochrome.

Element
Element Nera are rare and have only taken the genetic typing of the Pokemon it first encountered. Once introduced to a fused or unfused Pokemon it will change their typing and often give the Pokemon new features of the new typing such as fire or leaves added onto the design.
